How to use the Respondus LockDown browser with UF

The Respondus lockdown browser can be used with the Respondus monitor to record students' online exam sessions. The browser records every detail of the exam session including errors using a microphone. This technology can be used in multiple education systems, such as Blackboard and Canvas. Below is a video showing how to install and configure Respondus monitors. Once the system has been set up you can conduct an exam using the webcam.

Installing Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser installation requires administrative privileges. Installing Respondus LockDown browser on a computer you do not own is advisable. To download Respondus LockDown Browser, click the Download Installer link. Click on "Run" or the "File Download Inst" button to select the file, and then run the installation. Close all programs except those that are connected to the Internet after the installer has completed installing the software.

Next, click "Install" on the lockdown browser installation page. You will see a box asking you to provide your password. Click "Submit." Once you click "submit," Respondus will begin testing the software. Without clicking the Finish button, you cannot close the software. After passing the test, you'll be presented with a confirmation message. Click "OK" in order to confirm the installation. Once you have successfully installed Respondus LockDown Browser, you can use it to take tests.

Configuring Respondus Monitor

After installing the Respondus LockDown Web Browser, you will be able to configure the Monitor so that your webcam is used for recording. This will let you see the results of students and instructors without needing to be present in person. You can set a password to protect your webcam from being accessed by others. Then, you should launch the Respondus Monitor. If you've already set up your LockDown Browser you can skip to the Advanced Settings section, and instead go to Configuring Respondus Monitor.


You can configure the Respondus Monitor to be used in an upcoming exam by logging into your LockDown browser and selecting the "Proctored” option. This option only works for exams that are administered by University Testing Centers. This option requires a LockDown Web Browser. The proctor needs to have an exam access key. You can then proceed to step 2 if you are able and willing to give the password to your proctor.

This tool can't be accessed through a standard browser, so you'll need to launch the Respondus LockDown Browser on your computer before you can take an exam. Once you have logged in using your myUTRGV credentials open the Respondus LockDown browser on your computer. Navigate to the test that you want to take.

LockDown is an extension that can be downloaded from the Chrome web store. It is important to turn on the Respondus Monitor webcam. Before installing the extension you will need to ensure your device has a working webcam. Follow the instructions in this installer to ensure that Respondus LockDown Browser is installed on your webcam.

Respondus Monitor offers a webcam for an exam

LockDown browsers at universities or colleges allow you to use the webcam option for your exam. To set up the quiz, first open the browser. Then enable the Respondus monitor. Once the quiz is set up, use the webcam to take the exam. The instructor can view your face via the webcam, and you will receive video evidence. During the exam, you will be able to use the webcam for answering questions.

During the exam, you must present identifying documents. Click 'Environment Check to record the environment where you are taking the exam. 'Facial Detection Check" checks if the student’s face is visible within the camera's frame. You will need to follow the directions provided in the Support Guide to enable the microphone. If you do not have any other applications running, you can skip this step.
