Using Lecture Podcasts to Enhance Learning

wida conference 2020

Mika LaVaque–Manty started to experiment with lecture podcasts back in 2006. Since then, she has taught 400-level courses as well as large introductory courses with lecture podcasts. Profcast, a shareware software that captures and syncs slides with audio files, is used by her.

Podcasts are a great way to learn

Lecture podcasts provide students with the benefit of being able to catch up on missed lectures and/or sections of lectures while not having to attend class in person. These podcasts can be downloaded to multiple devices so they are always available. This makes them valuable tools for exam preparation and finals.

A lecture podcast can also be used to help with revision. Students can pause and play back sections they need during stressful revision. Lecture podcasts offer many benefits. They enable students to review old lectures and to better understand the concepts.

Barriers that prevent their use

Students reported using lecture podcasts for a range of purposes, but there were some issues that were considered barriers to their use. These were not due to technical difficulties. However, after students received some help with the technology, podcasts were easier to use. Students felt podcasts enhanced their learning experience and added value to course materials. These students discovered podcasts to be a great tool to enhance their understanding of complex topics.

University students are increasingly using lecture podcasts, but very little research has examined the student experience with these materials. It is not known if lecturing podcasts have resulted in more students being absent from class. We don't know much about the obstacles and facilitators that students face when listening or using lecture podcasts. Students who had access to important lectures in Pharmacology via podcasts expressed their appreciation for them and their perceived value.

They are available for you

Students can listen to lectures podcasts online. This is a great way to learn at their own pace. These audio files are available for download to any device. Students can listen whenever they have the time. These files are also free for teachers to download and use in the classroom. These podcasts can be used by college students to review material before an exam or test.

Lecture podcasts can be a great way for students to learn, but it is difficult to have face-to–face interactions between faculty and students. However, there are ways to improve the content of a lecture podcast. For example, more online discussions and group chats through an instant messaging platform could make it more engaging for students. One concern is whether students who are hard of hearing can access lecture podcasts. Descript and Zoom both allow instructors the ability to record audio from classes.

Students learning is impacted

The use of lecture podcasts may have significant impacts on student learning, especially in lectures that have large audiences. Podcasts combine complementary content and employ cognitive learning strategies to increase understanding and knowledge. Students who listened to podcasts had higher satisfaction and achievement scores than students in the control group.

The use of lecture podcasts in higher education has been implemented successfully in several universities across the world. The present study aims to investigate whether students have different preferences regarding the way they integrate content into their learning.

FAQ

What are some of the key obstacles to eLearning success?

The biggest challenge in e-Learning lies not in technicality but rather in culture. It's about people and how they interact.

We must understand their motivations and learn how they learn best. It is also important to understand what motivates them and how they feel about learning online.

We need to find ways to make it as natural and effortless as possible.

What equipment is needed to do eLearning effectively?

The most important thing you need to do when you start an online course is to ensure you have everything set up correctly on your computer. You'll probably want to use Adobe Captivate as well as a webcam and microphone.

Also, ensure that all required software is installed on your computer. This includes Microsoft Office (Word Excel PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat Reader Flash Player Java Runtime Environment QuickTime 7 and Shockwave Flash 10.0.

Camtasia Studio from TechSmith is another screen capture tool you may want to consider. This allows you to capture what's happening on your computer screen as you work.

Finally, you might want to download a web conferencing tool like WebEx or GoToMeeting. These programs allow you to connect with other people who are watching the same presentation at the same time. You can also share your desktop with others.

What is eLearning?

E-learning is an online learning solution for individuals, organizations, and institutions. It's a method of transmitting information and instruction via electronic media, such as computers and mobile devices.

This type of learning uses technology to deliver information rather than physical materials.

E-learning is not confined to traditional classroom settings but may also take place at home, on the road, or anywhere else where people have access to the Internet.

Is it necessary to have an Internet connection for eLearning

It all depends what you're looking for. If it's just an online course, then no internet connection is required. Access to the internet is required if you plan to use interactive features like quizzes, etc.

What are the advantages of e-learning for students and teachers?

E-learning has many benefits, including improved learning outcomes for students and teachers. It makes it easy for learners to have access to information whenever they need it. E-learning allows educators to interact with students through technology in new ways.

E-learning allows teachers and students to receive individualized instruction, feedback, as well as support. Students are more motivated and engaged as a result. Teachers can use e-learning to develop skills such as communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Teachers can use it to improve their teaching by offering opportunities for reflection on other's experiences and self-reflection.

E-learning makes it possible to cut down on training costs. A teacher might want to teach his/her class about a topic but doesn't have the money to buy books or materials. However, the same material may be available online so there's no need to buy it.

How To

How can e-learning be used to enhance traditional learning?

E-learning has been around since the 1980s and is still evolving. There are so many types that e-learning is possible, it would be impossible for me to list them all. However, I will mention the most important ones.

  1. E-learning can be used to supplement traditional learning. For example, a teacher may use an interactive whiteboard to demonstrate a concept while simultaneously recording her voice explaining the concept using audio technology. To reinforce the lesson, students could listen to the audio file in class.
  2. E-learning is a way to replace traditional education. For example, a student might access a tutorial by going to a website. He/she might follow along with video instructions to complete the exercise at his/her leisure.
  3. E-learning can complement traditional learning. To access large amounts of information, a student could log on to a website. The student can then browse through the material, and choose the parts that they want to examine.
  4. E-learning allows students to learn outside the classroom. For example, a tutor could provide feedback on a student's work via email. A student can also ask questions to other students through instant messaging.
  5. E-learning can enable distance education. E-learning can enable distance education. For example, a professor at a university could lecture to hundreds online.
  6. E-learning is a great tool for corporate training. Companies often offer webinars to update employees on new products or services.
  7. E-learning can strengthen academic performance. Students enrolled on a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), for example, could engage in discussion forums, contribute content, and even earn badges when they complete certain tasks.
  8. E-learning has the potential to enhance communication skills. An example: A student could send an assignment by email to another student.
  9. E-learning can help develop critical thinking skills. Students could, for example, create podcasts or blogs to share their views on a topic.
  10. E-learning can help with problem solving. One example is a group of students working together on a project using Google Docs.
  11. Collaboration can be achieved through e-learning. Two students could meet in person to discuss a problem. If one of the students was at home, they could still communicate via Skype.
  12. E-learning is a way to learn on your own terms. For example, students can set their own goals and deadlines when undertaking a course.
  13. E-learning can encourage creativity. For instance, students may upload videos of themselves creating art projects.
  14. E-learning can encourage independence. You might let your child play educational games for fun without any parental supervision.
  15. E-learning can promote lifelong learning. As long as there is Internet access, seniors can learn new things.
